ASSOCIATION PROFILE
AIDI is the main no-profit association in the lighting field
in Italy. In activity since 1959, with offices in Milan, it
is present on the national territory with territorial
sections.
From its foundation, the association performs an incisive
and constant action of scientific, technical and cultural
information for the diffusion of the knowledge of the
problems related to the lighting topics.
AIDI is ambassador of the modern Italian culture of the
light, and bears witness, from its constitution, to the
history and the image of its partners: an enlightened and
courageous entrepreneurial class, scholars and personality
of the academic world, service companies, planners, lighting
designers, light lovers, who, with their care and
intelligence, have not only contributed to the life and
development of the association, but also to the world-wide
success of the Italian lighting.
CULTURE OF THE LIGHT
“Light culture” is a binding message, that cannot be left
unheard any longer.
In the society where we live it’s strongly felt the need
that all its technical components compete for improving the
quality of life.
Among these, the light gets more and more importance.
“Culture of the Light” in the first place, means recognize
the function the light has in our daily life.In the working
place, one’s house, public places, hospitals, schools, or on
the roads and, not last, in urban and extra-urban landscapes,
a better lighting brings better quality of light, security
and work conditions.
AIDI aims at rationalizing and improving the use of lighting.
This is what we mean when we talk about “Culture of the
Light”, for a life really made to measure of all of us.
MISSION (Purposes and activity)
AIDI’s primary purpose is the diffusion of knowledge of all
the aspects related to the lighting and to the promotion of
study and research, to support the development of its
applications, also with the aim to pave the way for better
living and work conditions.
AIDI performs didactic, cultural and spreading activity both
at central and territorial level, establishes its committees
and study commissions, and creates formation centres to
award student grants, to stimulate wider interest for the
Culture of the Light, above all by young people. AIDI keeps
relations with corporations, associations, laboratories,
centres of research, national and international committees
that, in Italy and abroad, act directly or indirectly in
connection with the development of studies and applications
of lighting.
This way, AIDI promotes the development of the lighting
technique field and places itself today, after almost fifty
years of activity, as the privileged interlocutor among the
productive, professional, academic and institutional worlds.
PARTNERS
AIDI Partners are divided into six categories:
INDIVIDUAL: including all the people interested in studying
and developing the theory and the practice of the lighting.
ORDINARY collectives: industrial or commercial companies,
service companies, associations, corporations, and public
administrations, university, institutes. SUPPORTING
collectives: including all those companies and corporations
supplying a more punctual support to the association’s
initiatives.
HONORARY collectives: they supply the AIDI activity with a
substantial contribution.
NATIONAL collectives: including all those structures which,
operating on a national level; produce a determining
contribution to the life and the activity of AIDI.
STUDENTS: all the students entered universities or graduate
courses organized by public or private, Italian or foreign
institutes, under twenty-seven years of age.
AIDI ON THE TERRITORY
AIDI operates on a national level.
However it also has a territorial structure to better
satisfy the local entreaties with initiatives in accordance
with the requirements of the Association’s board of
directors and carried out with the help of AIDI partners in
the territory.
The presence of AIDI in the Italian regions is a very
positive signal confirming the diffusion of a culture of the
good lighting throughout the national territory.
The initiatives realized by the territorial Sections, on the
AIDI Board of Directors approval, have the purpose to
support professionally the assertion of the concept of
quality.
Specifically with the promotion of actions aiming at
awakening different audiences: from corporations to town
Councils, from service companies to consumers and category
associations, from professions to the school world.
The light is not only useful because of its functions but
also is more and more important within the environment and
the living.
Hence it comes a growing attention by the local governments
and the citizens for a more mature project and management of
doing and well aware of the “place value”: from the
reduction of costs and energy consumptions, to the
architectural improvement, to the reassembling of all the
elements of the cultural history of the territory, in order
to give back its liveable and recognizable image.
AIDI through his partners’ care on all the national
territory competes to pursue these aims, through a new
ethics of building and living, whose project the light is an
essential part.
THE INTERNATIONAL NETWORK
Ambassador of the renewed and modern culture of the light,
AIDI, since the first years of its constitution, has ensured,
supported and promoted for the world of production,
professions and research, a constant and effective
relationship of cooperation with the most important
associations and international companies of the field. An
action still going on today with identical care in a
reciprocal exchange of information and meetings with the
European sisters associations, in particular with the French,
Swiss, Belgian, English, Dutch and German ones.
AIDI takes part, as a quality member of council and board of
directors, in the activity of the “LUX EUROPA”, of which it
was one of the founder members back in 1969.
It gives an active contribution to the organization of the
LUX EUROPA Congress which takes place every four years in
one of the member countries.
AIDI furthermore participates actively with its
representatives, to the international sessions promoted by
“CIE”: Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage, the maximum
international organ which treats the lighting problems.
Since 1996 AIDI has also assumed the “sole right” for the
diffusion of the “CIE” publications in Italy, and since
January 2005 it’s been active partner of “CIE”, assuring the
Italian participation in the normative activity of the
Commission.
In this era of deep environmental transformation it’s maybe
the town, crossed by its networks, flows, infrastructures,
goods, and services, that shows a clearer mutation in its
own nature and in its inhabitants’ life.
In front of a spreading global economy that incorporates a
growing difference of national economies, the task that
concerns such an association as AIDI, in strict contact with
the other international light associations, is to foster a
reciprocal exchange of informations, opinions and
evaluations among those who contribute to the light system:
companies, lighting designers, scholars, researchers and
those who, town-planners, architects, designers, contribute
with their vision and culture to new forms of planning and
new ways of living.
The world of the Italian light, in the international network
of architecture, urbanism and light, does not limit its
action only tothe technical discipline or to the
technological research, but takes active part, through its
culture, in an idea of town, of excellence, of quality in an
era that’s only the beginning of a deep global
transformation
FORMATION
A big part of the enterprises of the association expands to
formation with the organization of different level classes
and specialized courses.
The aim of formation is to contribute to the professional
updating of its own members, especially the individual
partners and the students.
AIDI furthermore cooperates with university, public and
private institutes, companies, public administrations, for
the project and the organization of classes of lighting
technique on topics of specific interest.
Alongside the didactic activity, AIDI pays specific
attention in taking part in the normative activity of the
competent corporations, in the editing and spreading of
technical guides and in supporting or sponsoring collateral
enterprises especially addressed to young people and to the
world of the culture.
AIDI promotes exchange of information among the partners and
activates any other useful initiative to support a qualified
formation of the light culture.
This way it protects the cultural and ethical values which
are the basis of its constitution.
CONVENTIONS
Privileged opportunities to deal with “the state of art” and
the last innovations of the field, the Conventions have
always been an essential moment of meeting and exchange and
the place where it gets shaped, within the scientific
community, a shared basis of ideas and values.
Therefore the National AIDI Conventions are a necessary
appointment repeated every year, while the international
conventions act as a call for the widest scholars
participation from all over the world.
A great success repeated in 2006 too, with the organization
of the International Convention of Venice: called “Light and
Architecture”.
THE AIDI PRIZE
The AIDI national prize, established in 1991 to promote the
light culture, intends to turn to better account young
students’ job in the lighting field.
The prize is awarded every year to architecture and
engineering neo-graduates who have discussed a dissertation
in an Italian university - about the light topics - during
the previous academic year to the one in which the
announcement has been issued.
Interpreting the growth and the diversification of the
lighting technique formation in act in the Italian
universities, the prize is divided into two sections: one to
the research and one to the project.
PUBLICATIONS FOLDER
AIDI promotes the development of the publishing activity
as a support to the scientific popularization and technical
information activities.
More than twenty titles are still in catalogue, from
technical publications to national and international
Conventions’ records, issued by AIDI since the very first
1971 editions, with the contribution of renowned
professionals and AIDI partners scholars.
With special care and attention for the contents, AIDI edits
“LUCE”, a bimonthly magazine, established in 1962, and
official organ of the association, which treats all the
matters of lighting: from interiors to the exteriors, from
the artificial light to the natural one; it refers about
technical developments, results of researches, new
technologies and new materials, about national and
international regulations, and besides it provides with news
and information about conventions, exhibitions and books.
A high profile scientific Committee, answers for the
publishing plan of the magazine.
For scientific or technical deepenings, a renewed edition of
AIDI’s “Quaderni”, addressed to the professional and
academic world, is about to come out.
The speed, a gift of the technology, allows trough internet
to get to the partners and friends of AIDI, to communicate

A constantly updated information, in real time, containing
news along with short notes and reflections or articles and
reviews, arrived to the editorial office, concerning
projects, enterprises, conventions, exhibitions, shows that
can be of interest for the world of the light, of
architecture, of design, but also of the photography and of
contemporary art, where light is more and more part of
